Toffifee is a German candy built from four layers in one bite: a chewy caramel cup, a whole roasted hazelnut, hazelnut nougat cream and a dot of chocolate on top. It is made by August Storck KG, it launched in Germany in 1973, and in the United States the same product has historically been sold under the name Toffifay.
If you have ever seen a flat plastic tray of little brown cups in a European grocery aisle and wondered what on earth they were - that was Toffifee. It is one of those candies that is completely ordinary in Germany and almost unknown in the US, which is exactly why people end up googling it after a trip abroad or a friend brings a pack back. Here is the honest explainer.
So what is Toffifee, exactly?
Each piece is built in four layers, from the bottom up:
- A chewy caramel cup - the outer shell, soft rather than hard
- A whole roasted hazelnut - one per piece, sitting in the middle
- Hazelnut nougat cream - the smooth layer poured over the nut
- A dot of chocolate - the shiny cap on top
That is the whole thing. No wafer, no filling surprises. What makes it work is the texture contrast: the caramel is chewy, the nut is crunchy, the nougat is soft. You get all three in one bite, which is why one piece is rarely enough.
Why is it called Toffifee?
The name is simply toffee with a candy-sounding ending stuck on it. Germans pronounce it roughly "TOFF-ee-fay" - three syllables, not two.
Is Toffifee the same as Toffifay?
Yes, same manufacturer and same concept - only the label differs. In the United States, Storck has historically sold the product as Toffifay, while the German and most European packaging says Toffifee.
If you specifically want the German-market version - the packaging you actually saw in Germany - that is what we import. Ours comes from Germany, not from a US distribution line.
How do Germans actually eat it?
Toffifee is not really a "grab a bar on the go" candy. In Germany it shows up in three situations:
On the coffee table
The tray goes out when guests come over, next to the coffee. Nobody serves it on a plate - the tray is the plate.
Sharing with several people
That is what the 48-piece maxi pack is for: one tray that several people eat from, instead of passing around a 15-piece box.
Christmas and gifting
Toffifee is a standard small gift in Germany, usually alongside other classics. If you are putting together a care package, it travels well - the caramel keeps its shape better than a thin chocolate bar.
Which pack should you start with?
There are three versions worth knowing:
| Pack | Pieces | Top layer | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toffifee 15 Pieces (125g) | 15 | Milk chocolate | First try - the classic tray |
| Toffifee Maxi Pack | 48 | Milk chocolate | Sharing, or if you already know you like it |
| Toffifee White Chocolate (125g) | 15 | White chocolate and cream | A second pack - sweeter, milder, less nutty |
Start with the classic. The white version is a nice second pack, not a first one.
What should you pair it with?
If you are ordering anyway, Toffifee sits well next to a hazelnut chocolate bar - the flavors run in the same family. Have a look at our chocolate collection or the chocolate bars if you want to build a proper first order. If you would rather not pick individual items, the bundles do the choosing for you, and the best sellers page shows what people actually reorder.
FAQ
Does Toffifee contain gelatin? Is it vegetarian?
Toffifee is built from caramel, hazelnuts, nougat and chocolate - layers that are not normally made with gelatin. We do not reproduce the full ingredient list here and recipes can change, so if gelatin matters to you, read the ingredient list on the pack you receive. It does contain milk, so it is not vegan.
Can I buy real German Toffifee in the USA?
Yes. Import shops like ours ship the German-market packs directly. We process orders within 1-3 business days, and standard delivery to the USA takes 7-14 business days after dispatch. Any customs duties or import fees are charged separately by the authorities and are paid by the customer.
What is the difference between Toffifee and Rolo or Werther's?
Rolo is caramel inside chocolate - two layers, no nut. Werther's is a hard (or chewy) cream caramel on its own. Toffifee is the only one of the three that puts a whole hazelnut and a nougat layer inside a caramel cup. Fun detail: Werther's and Toffifee come from the same company.
Worth trying?
If you like hazelnut and caramel, yes - it is one of the easiest German candies to love, and it does not taste like anything on a normal American candy shelf. If you are not a nut person, skip it and go for a plain milk chocolate bar instead.
